7 Foods to Manage Dry Eyes
Dry eyes occur when the tears do not supply enough lubrication for the eyes. Those suffering from chronic dry eyes experience uncomfortable symptoms. For example, they may feel redness, burning or stinging, and the feeling that something is lodged in the eye. Often external factors (i.e., weather and diet) can cause dry eyes to be more intense. For example, prolonged time in air-conditioned rooms or heavy computer use can make one more acceptable to eye dryness. Reaching for over the counter dry eye treatments (i.e., natural tears eye drops) can be a short-term solution. Here are seven foods to help manage dry eyes: 1. Fatty fish A proper diet that contains omega-3 fatty acids as they have many health benefits. Tuna, salmon, cod, and sardines provide omega-3 fatty acids. Studies have shown that these fatty acids can reduce inflammation. Having inflammation can cause dry eye disease to occur. Dry eye disease can cause inflammation to occur as well. 2. Ground flaxseed Flaxseeds are also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids. A diet rich in flaxseeds can reduce the symptoms of dry eyes. Studies have shown flaxseed may also decrease the risk of macular degeneration. Cataracts are the clouding of the eye lenses, and a diet rich in flaxseed has been shown to reduce the likelihood of developing this condition.
