Medical research is inherently incremental, qualified, and conditional. News headlines are built to be brief and attention-holding. Read past the headline to find the actual study

Most health articles link to, or at least name, the journal and research team behind a finding. Locate that reference. If no primary source is cited, treat the claim with additional caution. Identify the study type

Not all study designs carry equal evidential weight. Funding source does not automatically invalidate a study, but it is relevant context. Reputable journals require authors to disclose funding and conflicts of interest — this information usually appears at the end of the paper.

Look for expert commentary and independent response

Quality health journalism seeks comment from researchers who were not involved in the study. Look for quotes or attributed reactions from independent scientists, clinicians, or public health bodies. Scientific consensus is built from many studies, replicated across different populations and settings over time.

When a headline announces a dramatic reversal of conventional wisdom, healthy skepticism is warranted. It is far more common for new research to add nuance to existing knowledge than to overturn it entirely.
