7 Harmful Foods for Dogs
It is okay if you feel your dog should have a taste of your delicious food. Many people find it hard to ignore the eyes of innocent pups begging for everything they put in their mouths. If you love and care for your dog, there are things you should never give your dog. Here are seven harmful foods for dogs:
1. Peaches and plums
Many people feel that it is okay to give their dogs peaches and plums, but that is absolutely wrong. While these foods could be a good source of proteins for humans when fed to dogs, they can cause serious stomach upset, and your dog might encounter digestive complications. Also, you are strongly discouraged from sharing preserved or canned peaches with your dog.
2. Avocado
Avocado contains persin, which is a toxin. While persin is entirely safe for human consumption, it is very poisonous for your dog. The toxin is found in things such as bark, leaves, pits, and fruits. If your dog consumes these things, fluids will accumulate in its chest and lungs, thereby blocking air circulation.
3. Caffeinated beverages
Caffeine occurs naturally in tea, coffee, guarana, and cocoa. It is also available in some soft drinks and medications. When dogs consume caffeinated beverages, it can stimulate the nervous system and heart rate in dogs. If your dog consumes caffeine, you will note that it experiences excessive thirst, restlessness, diarrhea, and lack of bladder control.
4. Grapes and raisins
Grapes and Raisins can be highly toxic to your dog. They are known to cause kidney failure, and if left unchecked, can be fatal. While the compounds in grapes are not very clear, when your dogs consume them even in small amounts, they will fall sick. Though toxic levels will vary among dogs, it is reported that some dogs will die when they consume raisins and grapes.
5. Dairy products
Just like humans, after some time, dogs too can become intolerant to lactose. When your dog consumes a lot of milk and other dairy products, it will vomit and have diarrhea. Excess lactose can also lead to digestive complications in dogs. While these products are not entirely bad for your dog, be sure not to let them consume excess lactose.
6. Chocolate
Chocolate contains chemicals such as caffeine and theobromine, and both of them are very hard to metabolize. If your dog consumes these, it will experience extreme stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. After some time, your dog will become dehydrated and might die. Instead, find safe food for your puppy instead of putting them through such troubles.
7. Onions and garlic
These are some of the foods you must never give to your dog. Onions and garlic are bad for your dog because they can cause anemia and damage your dog’s red blood cells. If you feed your dog these foods, at some point, they will need a blood transfusion, which might as well cost you a lot of money.
Always make sure to only use healthy dog food. Unless you do that, you subject your dog’s health to a lot of risks. There are many other foods that your dog should avoid, but the ones mentioned above are the most common ones. If you notice that your puppy has developed health complications after eating something, contact your veterinary expert immediately.
